Alumni Spotlight: Hunter McMaster ‘09

Cissy Pope

“For the majority of my schooling, I don’t recall having a strong affinity for math, that is until I was placed into Mr. Neal's pre-calculus class. Prior to his class, my grades in math were not very impressive. I only qualified for Mr. Neal's class because I had done well on a standardized test. However, during my junior and senior years, Mr. Neal was able to foster my genuine love for the subject. From that moment on, math has continued to be my favorite area of study. In fact, my career is mostly built around quantitative analysis.”

Having spent ten years as a Hammond student, Hunter continued his education at Washington and Lee University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2013. After graduation, he moved to New York City following a career opportunity with Goldman Sachs on their Algorithmic Trading desk. In 2018, Hunter transitioned to his current role on Morgan Stanley's Foreign Exchange Derivative Sales team, structuring and identifying macroeconomic trading opportunities for hedge funds.

"I am blessed to have had the Hammond experience. Only a place like Hammond offers students the opportunity to transition from math class, to an athletic practice, followed by a scholastic extracurricular, and to end the day at choir practice. It's the aggregate of those experiences that helped me throughout college and in my professional life today."

Reflecting on his decade at Hammond, Hunter is most appreciative of the mentors that shaped him along the way. “Hammond teachers and coaches played a pivotal role in my pursuit of the position I’m in today.”

Hunter is active on the Young Executive Board of iMentor in New York City and Be A Mentor in Charleston, SC where he serves as a mentor to students in those respective cities.
