Math Olympiad

Aayush Karan, through his performance on the first and second round of the American Mathematics Competition series has qualified to participate in the the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad. The USA(J)MO is the third step in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) series of math contests. This series of contests is used to identify and nurture high level mathematical talent in students across America.

The first round the AMC is taken by more then 300,000 students. The top 2% of those students are invited to take a second round test called the AIME -- which is a 15 question, 3 hour test. From there, the top 10% of AIME qualifiers (approximately 500 students in the nation) are invited to take the USA Mathematical Olympiad or USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad.

Aayush Karan is the only student from South Carolina this year to qualify for the Mathematical Olympiad. The USA(J)MO is a 6 question, 9 1/2 hour exam on which students write rigorous mathematical proofs for each question. The top 30 to 40 students from the Mathematical Olympiad are invited to the USA Summer Olympiad training camp at Carnegie Mellon University where training and selection for the US International Math Olympiad team begins.

The USA(J)MO will take place from 12:30pm-5:00pm on Wednesday, April 19th and Thursday, April 20th. We wish Aayush luck on this exam!
