Middle School Participates in Youth in Government
Seventy-one students from grades six through eight participated in Youth in Government (YIG), presenting and voting on mock legislation with other students from around the state. Saabyr Beyg (6th) was awarded Outstanding Statesman, and Lola Thompson (6th) won a Rising Star Award. Seventh graders Drew McCall and Charlie Allen were awarded Outstanding Bill.
The Youth in Government program helps to create the next generation of good citizens. YIG seeks to demystify local, state and national governmental systems so tomorrow's adults will know how to effect change within these systems. The program uses the service-learning model in the belief that leadership is developed by doing. High school students help provide leadership for middle school programs, while college students -- alumni of the Youth in Government program -- provide leadership for high school students.
