The Sammataro Family
Sam and Nan Sammataro want the best for their daughter, Lucy Mills, so when they realized her previous school wasn’t the right learning environment for her, they decided to make a change. Change is hard, but sometimes necessary. Every student learns differently, and when Nan and Sam realized Lucy Mills needed a more traditional and challenging learning environment, they began to look at other options in the Columbia area. That’s when they found Hammond.
After looking around at several different schools, they visited Hammond. “The Head of the Lower School and the Admissions Director spent hours with us and answered every question we had,” says Sam. “They walked us through the curriculum, emphasizing a cohesive approach from pre-K to twelfth grade. I felt assured at that point they were going to support us, and I felt they cared about our daughter’s academic success and about us as a family.”
Lucy Mills started Hammond in the 4th grade, and Sam and Nan are confident they made the right choice. “She was expected, for the first time, to really strive for academic achievement,” agrees Nan. “She has grasped what it means to plan ahead and to study. Those are building blocks she’ll use for the rest of her life.”
Now Lucy Mills is in the 8th grade and loves her classes, friends, and the opportunities she has at Hammond. She has been inducted into the National Junior Honor Society and rides for the Hammond Hunt Seat Equestrian Team. Watching their daughter thrive and learn, Sam and Nan know they made the right decision. And, since starting at Hammond, several of Lucy Mills’ cousins also have enrolled in the Lower School. It is exciting for them to see Lucy Mills’ younger cousins coming to Hammond knowing they will be able to take advantage of a Hammond education at an early age.
