Learning Support

Every student comes to us with his or her own story. We help them write the next chapter leveraging their own unique skills and learning styles.

Academic Center for Excellence  - Grades 5th - 12th

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) works with middle and upper school students to foster independent learning habits required for academic success at Hammond and beyond. Our goal is to empower students to overcome challenges, build their confidence, and unleash their full potential. We offer tailored support in a nurturing and supportive environment where students are free to stretch and grow.

ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT
Students develop critical skills such as time management, calendar planning, organization of materials, and managing assignments.
STUDY SKILLS
Students are introduced to a variety of effective, research-based study skills and when to use them.
SELF-ADVOCACY
Students learn how to effectively communicate with classroom teachers and coaches; how to establish make-up plans after an absence; and how to ask for extra help.
ACADEMIC PLAN MANAGEMENT
When students have been diagnosed with a learning difference through an outside psychological evaluation, The Director of the ACE creates an individualized Academic Plan to address learning accommodations. Students who qualify for extended time and small group testing may choose to complete their assessments in the ACE.
TUTORIAL SUPPORT
If a student needs one-on-one assistance beyond what is offered by the classroom teacher, subject-specific tutorial support may be arranged.
PARENT & FACULTY SUPPORT
ACE staff and classroom teachers collaborate regularly to determine the best means to support our students. The ACE is also a resource for parents, offering frequent parent information sessions on topics such child development, executive function and exam preparation.

Development Enrichment Center – Grades Pre-Kindergarten – 4th

The Developmental Enrichment Center (DEC) is the Lower School’s support resource for younger students. The DEC staff collaborates with teachers and parents to coordinate the most appropriate support services students. These support services may include parent/staff conferences, classroom interventions, and group or individual support within the DEC. After extended observation of a student and appropriate conferencing with parents and teacher, DEC staff will create a plan of support. We view these interventions as a short-term way to bridge a gap in skill development. Our goal is to target learning problems and help students develop strategies that help compensate for learning deficits. With additional support, students feel confident in the classroom to successfully meet the requirements of our curriculum.

WHEN WE COME TOGETHER WE CAN ACHIEVE WONDEROUS THINGS.

THIS IS HAMMOND THINKING AHEAD — The combination of our extensive programs, talented faculty, first class facilities, and sense of community. This is what helps us grow compassionate, articulate, and disciplined young people. — THIS IS HAMMOND.
