Teeing Up Success: The Short Game Course at 10 Years

This fall, Hammond Athletics celebrates a milestone: 10 years on the course, right in our own backyard. Opened in 2015 as a generous gift to the school, the short game facility was the first of its kind at a South Carolina independent school, establishing Hammond as a pioneer in giving student-athletes a dedicated space to master their game.

Tucked behind the lacrosse field on South Campus, the course has become both a quiet retreat and a powerhouse training ground. With greens that rival full-size courses and plantings that give it a big-course feel, it’s more than just a practice spot, it’s a gem that has shaped a decade of Hammond golf.

And what a decade it has been. Since its opening, Hammond golfers have earned 33 All-Region and 6 All-State selections, 4 SCISA Medalist titles, 5 SCISA Golfer of the Year honors, and 4 Coach of the Year awards for Fred Wadsworth. The boys team claimed region championships in 2020, 2024, and 2025, extending a streak of nine straight titles, while the girls captured their own region crown in 2024. State championships followed too — two for the boys (2017, 2018) bringing their total to six, and one for the girls in 2009. Even more exciting, five Hammond golfers have gone on to compete at the collegiate level.

According to Coach Wadsworth, “Ten years ago, the Reddic family generously built the short game facility on South Campus. This facility has become an integral part of developing and honing golf skills. Because upwards of 70% of golf shots are played within a hundred yards of the green, the short game facility allows us to dial in distance control and dramatically improve scoring. On behalf of the entire Hammond golf program, we extend grateful appreciation for this gift that continues to benefit student-athletes.”

Building on this exceptional foundation, the Athletic Department recently added two QuadMax Plus launch monitors — state-of-the-art tools that track swing speed, spin rate, launch angle, trajectory, and carry distances — giving golfers an even sharper edge in training and performance.
