As sixth grade science teacher Jessie Jones will tell you, science has always been close to her heart. After earning a degree in Science Education with a focus on Earth and Space Science, she began exploring more about South Carolina’s geology when she moved to South Carolina in 2018. “I wanted to learn more about our local geology, specifically this area's fossils.” This exploration led her to discover Paleontologist Ashby Gale of Charleston Fossil Adventures. In 2019, Hammond welcomed Ashby to campus for the first time where he completed a two-day experience for sixth-grade science students. On day one, he helped students learn about South Carolina's unique geologic history and highlighted some of his own amazing fossils. The second day students searched for fossils by sorting gravel and sand to find and identify samples.

Even with COVID lab procedures in place, students traveled to a distant time as they discovered for themselves traces of a past geologic age.
