Alumni Spotlight: Margaret Deans Fawcett Grantz '09

Margaret Deans Fawcett Grantz, Class of 2009.

According to Margaret Deans Fawcett Grantz ’09, Hammond has been one of the most important constants in her life. “Hammond has been a huge part of my life and helped make me the person I am today.” The oldest of six Hammond graduates, Margaret Deans started Hammond in 1996, with the last of the Fawcett clan graduating in 2019. “I was Varsity Competition Cheerleading Coach until this year, so I can truthfully say the Hammond experience has followed me throughout my life.”

For Margaret Deans, the Hammond experience is much more than simply an education. “Hammond is a community that rallies behind each student to see the individual succeed. The school invests in the whole person, creating opportunities to learn so much about oneself. Hammond absolutely believed in me!” Margaret Deans reflects fondly on a night she was on the sidelines of football game, the next morning running in a cross country race, and the following day attending play practice. “No other school makes it possible for students to embrace all it has to offer. My advice to current students is to embrace the Hammond experience. Get involved in everything you can. Participate on an athletic team, have school spirit, and always remember your alma mater when you graduate!”

Margaret Deans credits Hammond for the success she enjoys today. Serving as Marketing Director of Camp Cole, she has parlayed the self-confidence she gained at Hammond into leading a nonprofit organization that strives to offer a camp experience for children who might not ordinarily have the opportunity due to disabilities or illness. “The essence of the Hammond community taught me that together we can make a difference. I think about that every day with my work at Camp Cole. Giving back for the greater good.”

In addition to raising two future Skyhawks, Margaret Deans loves working with people who want to make Columbia a better place. She was recently named a Wofford College 2021 Alumni Service Award Rising Star, and while she is no longer on the sidelines cheering the football team to victory, or coaching the competition team, she remains one of Hammond’s biggest cheerleaders.
