Christopher Gadsden Wells Endowment for the Arts Welcomes Sam Grosby '11

The Christopher Gadsden Wells Endowment for the Arts was pleased to welcome Sam Grosby ’11 back to campus as this year’s featured artist.  Classmate Pearson Fowler ’11 introduced Sam and shared memories of the two, along with Christopher Wells, and their mutual love of music.

An opera singer in Chicago, Sam held three sessions with students, encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones and listen to music for reasons other than just entertainment … to become true listeners of music.  Explaining his choice of opera, Sam noted, “Opera combines all art forms … artistic set design, singers, dancers, an orchestra, and vocals.” As a Hammond student, Sam was frequently featured in plays and at choral concerts.

Sam lives in Chicago and has performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Music of the Baroque, Chicago Opera Theater, Wolf Trap Opera, New York Festival of Song and Opera for the Young. As a Luminarts Fellow and grant recipient, he commissions song cycles regularly. He arranges performances of pop and new music alongside standard classical repertoire in an effort to challenge preconceptions surrounding high art. Sam is also a contributor for the Athenaeum Review, writing reviews and essays on music. He received his BM from the Eastman School of Music and his MM from Northwestern University.
