Alumnus Hastings Hensel '01 is Hammond's 2018 Christopher Gadsden Wells Endowment for the Arts Artist in Residence

Hastings graduated from Sewanee: The University of the South before earning his M.F.A. from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He teaches writing at Coastal Carolina University and lives with his wife, Lee, in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.

His writing has appeared in numerous journals and magazines, including Gray's Sporting Journal, The Greensboro Review, New South, storySouth, The Hopkins Review, PLEIADES, Valley Voices, Cave Wall, 32 Poems, and many others. His chapbook of poems, Control Burn, won the 2011 Iron Horse Literary Review Single-Author Competition. His first full-length collection, Winter Inlet, won the 2014-2015 Unicorn Press First Book Contest. In 2014 he was awarded the South Carolina Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship in Poetry, and in August 2015 he was named Grand Strand Artist of the Month.
