Where Math and Art Meet: The Quilt Project

Cissy Pope
What happens when two disciplines collide? Fifth grade math students have the equation figured out. They’ll be quick to tell you that math plus art equals … well, one large quilting bee!
This fall, our youngest middle school students stormed the Maker Space design lab to create art that incorporated newly-honed geometry skills.  Beginning with 13” x 13” squares, students were charged with calculating sums and discovering new ways to think about shapes.  Many students were surprised to learn that the best way to create a trapezoid is by combining a triangle with a rectangle.
Students took advantage of Maker Space equipment such as the Cricut machine and a host of sewing machines to begin assembling the pieces to create the blanket top. Once complete, the top will be quilted into a king-sized exercise in geometry.
Newly-acquired skills, exercises in combining disciplines, and collaborative learning … that about sums up The Quilt Project!
