Junior Counselor Leadership Program

Looking for a great summer experience working with children? The Junior Counselor Leadership Program is a great opportunity for students currently 13 – 17 years old, as well as students currently pursuing their undergraduate degree, who want to further develop their leadership and communication skills as well as gain experience in planning and instructing activities for children enrolled in Hammond Summer Programs, including Hammond’s Hawk Ridge Camp.

This program is an excellent opportunity to strengthen leadership skills that will impact each participate throughout their life and teach them how to effectively work with children. Through practical experience students accepted in this specialized leadership program will learn about behavior management, health and safety, communication, decision-making, team building and more.

Leadership Program Objectives

  • To provide an opportunity for youth (13 – 17 years old), as well as students currently pursuing their undergraduate degree to strengthen their leadership and communication skills, gain knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices of working with young children, and having an enjoyable and educational summer experience at Hammond.
  • To develop and build on skills such as teamwork, communication, setting goals, and making plans to achieve them, making decisions, handling conflicts and resolving problems.
  • Presenting and leading to both large and small groups.
  • To learn how to effectively work with children.

Program Goals

  • To provide students the opportunity to gain confidence, pride and a sense of community and accomplishment.
  • To build self-esteem.
  • To become effective communicators.
  • Help develop critical thinking skills.
  • To encourage leadership, responsibility, maturity and teamwork.

Program Delivery

Many methods are used to teach the program goals and core concepts that are established.  Some common methods of program delivery used are: debates, direct camper interaction, discussion-based, didactic, experiential, games, observation, performance/presentation, role-plays, and small group work.

Program Curriculum

The leadership program curriculum is designed to provide every participant with firsthand experiences of activity development, communication, being a role model and above all being a leader within the community.  Each week participants will attend a mandatory training/workshop session that will introduce different core concepts through engaging in a variety of hands-on activities.  The core concepts that are explored and taught are: What Is a Camp Counselor?; Counseling Skills; Knowing Your Campers; Managing Camper Behavior; Work With Groups; Leadership; and Programming.

Admission Requirements

Junior Counselor Leadership Program participants are chosen through an application process, which includes an application consisting of two parts, interviews, and other necessary forms. Participants must complete and submit part one of the application process online then submit part two to Mr. Kevin N. White, Director of Auxiliary Programs with two weeks of submitting part one of the application online. Part one of the application process involves the application fee that must be submitted prior to completing part two of the application process. Both part one and part two of the application process must be completed prior to the deadline, as late applications will not be considered for admission. Participants are able to withdraw from the program however applicants are strongly encouraged to be committed to being in the program for a minimum of four-weeks when they apply. Participation in the program does not guarantee employment at Hammond as a Summer Program Counselor, nor is participation in the program required to later apply to be a part of the Summer Program staff.

The Hammond Junior Counselor Leadership Program will accept a limited number of applicants per season, and not all applicants may be accepted.   Hammond School reserves the right to conduct interviews, reference checks of applicants, and reserves the right to deny applicants.

The deadline to submit part one online and submit part two of the application process to the Director of Auxiliary Programs to be considered in the Junior Counselor Leadership Program is Friday, March 17, 2017. Applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview for the week of April 10-14, 2017.

Participants that are accepted into the program will receive an acceptance letter from the Director of Auxiliary Programs no later than May 5. Participants accepted will receive one Hammond Junior Counselor polo shirt and a manual at the orientation.

Program Participation

Participation in the Junior Counselor Leadership Program is on a volunteer basis or paid, depending on the applicant’s age. Applicant’s that are 13 – 15 years old could only be accepted on a volunteer basis and applicant’s that are 16 – 17 years old or actively pursuing their undergraduate degree could be compensated, if accepted. Hammond will cover the cost for any fees associated with field trips, camp activities, one Junior Counselor polo shirt (uniform), and an educational curriculum for participates that are accepted in the program. Participants will need to bring their own lunch to camp each day or purchase lunch through the Skyhawk Lunch Program prior to the order deadlines.

Participants are to be at Hammond each day for at least four consecutive weeks from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM; or as scheduled by the Director of Auxiliary Programs. Participants that are 13 – 15 years old are only required to attend at least one full-week of summer programs, but are encouraged to attend more weeks, if interested.

Supervision

Each Junior Counselor accepted into the program will be provided with hands-on learning experiences under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Auxiliary Programs.  

Junior Counselor Orientation

Friday, June 2, 2017 - Time: TBA 

All participants accepted in the Junior Counselor Program are required to attend orientation. Location information will be provided to participants accepted in the program.

Application Fee

Junior Counselor Program Application fee: $35.00.

The application fee is non-refundable regardless of admission into the program.
