LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recently announced Palmetto Fellow and LIFE scholarship enhancements that go into effect following the freshman year for students in specified math and science majors at approved institutions. For more information visit the SC CHE website at www.che.sc.gov .

1. Continue to focus and do well in your classes. All colleges request a final transcript. Do not jeopardize your acceptance by posting grades lower than those by which you were accepted. Seniors enrolled in AP coursework should remember that AP exams are just around the corner. Be sure to read The New York Times article, Slackers Beware!

2. Keep a list of all scholarships you are offered and the amounts awarded. The College Counseling Office will ask you for this information in late April or early May.

3. Revisit schools if you need help making your decision over the next several months. Make arrangements in advance with teachers. Notify the Upper School Office of your travel plans in advance. May 1 is National Decision Day. You will need to make your choice and notify colleges of your selection by this date. You will need to do so in writing. Remember: End-of-the-year transcripts will be sent to the one college you designate as your college of choice.

4. If you are still attempting to qualify for the LIFE scholarship (SAT 1100/ACT 24, GPA 3.0) or the PALMETTO FELLOW SCHOLARSHIP (SAT 1400/ACT 32, GPA 4.0), you can take the SAT through the June test date. The SAT is offered March1, May 3, and June 7. Register online at www.collegeboard.com. The ACT is offered April 12 and June 14. Register online at www.actstudent.org.

5. Register online for SAT II’s if you need to do so. Check individual school requirements for the college you will attend. SAT II’s are given in May and June.

6. Keep Mrs. Bickley posted as you receive admission/scholarship decisions. Colleges do not notify the College Counseling Office of individual admission decisions.

7. Check the Hammond School College Counseling website for scholarship information. As scholarship information comes through the office, Mrs. Bickley will post it at www.hammondschool.org. Follow the links through Director’s Desk to Scholarships.

8. You should have ordered your graduation invitations, cap and gown from Balfour when they were on campus. If for some reason you did not, please contact Balfour directly at 798-5134. Balfour will deliver graduation orders on April 15, 9:45, in the Lecture Hall.

9. Write thank you notes to those who have assisted in your college application process. If you have not formally thanked the folks who wrote recommendations, you need to do so. You are fast becoming an adult and good manners will set you apart. Practice them.

10. Stay in contact with individual college financial aid offices concerning financial aid requirements and institutional scholarship possibilities.

11. Families interested in being considered for financial aid need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Some private institutions also require the CSS Profile which can be found at www.collegeboard.com.
