LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recently announced Palmetto Fellow and LIFE scholarship enhancements that go into effect following the freshman year for students in specified math and science majors at approved institutions. For more information visit the SC CHE website at www.che.sc.gov .

1. 1. Seniors should consider registering for the Vocare’ Workshop led by Coach Larry Moshell on February 23, 9:00-12:00, in the Lecture Hall. Registration and workshop information was mailed January 23. The Vocare’ Workshop will provide insightful information concerning your personal abilities and will serve as an excellent tool as you begin to make decisions concerning college majors and future vocations. Registration deadline: February 15.

2. Please keep Mrs. Bickley posted as you receive your admission decisions. Colleges do not notify the College Counseling Office of individual acceptances.

3. Keep a list of all scholarships you are offered and the amounts awarded. The College Counseling Office will ask you for this information in late April or early May.

4. Revisit schools if you need help making your decision over the next several months. Make arrangements in advance with teachers. Notify the Upper School Office of your travel plans in advance. May 1 is National Decision Day. You will need to make your choice and notify colleges of your selection by this date. You will need to do so in writing. Remember: End-of-the-year transcripts will be sent to the one college you designate as your college of choice.

5. If you are still attempting to qualify for the LIFE scholarship (SAT 1100/ACT 24, GPA 3.0) or the PALMETTO FELLOW SCHOLARSHIP (SAT 1400/ACT 32, GPA 4.0), you can take the SAT/ACT through the June test date. The SAT is offered March 1, May 3, and June 7. Register online at www.collegeboard.com. The ACT is offered February 9, April 12, June 14. Register online at www.actstudent.org .

6. A copy of your updated transcript (with refigured GPA including first semester senior year) has been included in this mailing. Please proof it carefully. If there are errors, please notify Ms. Sylvia Easler ASAP.

7. Stay in contact with individual college financial aid offices concerning financial aid requirements and institutional scholarship possibilities.

8. Families interested in being considered for financial aid need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Some private institutions also require the CSS Profile which can be found at www.collegeboard.com.

9. Continue to the Hammond School College Counseling website. Scholarship information will be posted as it comes available.

10. Your Hammond School College Guidebook has a number of financial aid/scholarship websites that should continue to prove useful in your scholarship search. Many of these websites are directly linked from the Hammond School College Counseling website as well.

11. Write thank you notes to those people who provided recommendations or other assistance during your college application process. This includes any college admission officer who might have been especially helpful at specific institutions.
