LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recently announced Palmetto Fellow and LIFE scholarship enhancements that go into effect following the freshman year for students in specified math and science majors at approved institutions. For more information visit the SC CHE website at www.che.sc.gov .

If you have not met SAT/ACT qualifications for the South Carolina LIFE Scholarship and plan to attend an in-state public/private college/university, you may continue to take the SAT/ACT through June 2008. The minimum SAT score for LIFE is 1100 with a 3.0 GPA. The minimum ACT is 24 with a 3.0 GPA. The LIFE is currently worth $5000/year.

Eligibility rules for the current $6700/year Palmetto Fellows Scholarship require an SAT of 1400 or an ACT of 32 and a 4.0 GPA. This scholarship can be used at any in-state public/private college/university. It’s not too late to retake the SAT in order to qualify for the Palmetto Fellows. You can take it through June 2008.

1. All applications should be completed by now. If you have any other applications to turn in, please do so as soon as possible. As always, check with colleges/universities about two weeks after submitting your application to make sure they have received everything.

2. Midyear transcripts will automatically be mailed to the schools to which you have applied. These transcripts will have first semester grades and a re-calculated GPA reflecting your first semester work.

3. If you applied and were accepted to a binding Early Decision program, you must withdraw all other applications in writing. This is part of the agreement you made when you applied Early Decision. (Please note: Wofford and Furman Early Decision acceptances are binding on January 15. Other binding Early Decision acceptances are binding as soon as the student is accepted by the college.)

4. Stay focused. Your acceptances are provisional. Colleges expect you to maintain or improve the level of performance at which you were accepted.

5. Please keep Mrs. Bickley posted as you receive admission decisions from the colleges to which you have applied. Colleges do not notify us.

6. Keep a list of all scholarships and the amounts awarded. The College Counseling Office will ask you for this information in late April or early May.

7. Revisit colleges if you need help making your decision over the next several months. May 1 is National Decision Day. You will need to make your choice and notify colleges of your selection by this date. Remember: End-of-the-Year transcripts will be sent to the one college you designate as your college of choice.

8. Contact individual college financial aid offices to explore financial aid requirements and institutional scholarship possibilities.

9. Both FAFSA and CSS Profile financial aid forms are available online at:

For FAFSA: www.fafsa.ed.gov (required by most institutions for financial aid
consideration)

Please note: Before beginning the FAFSA your family should apply for a US
Department of Education personal identification number (PIN) at
www.pin.ed.gov. A PIN is required in order to complete the
FAFSA.

For CSS Profile: www.collegeboard.com (required by some private colleges and
scholarship sponsors)
