In Fine Arts classes, the faculty’s vision is to develop student talent, cultivate creative problem-solving, and build an appreciation for the arts. Through interactive, hands-on experiences, students gain real world skills and build confidence in their ability to engage in creative projects.
Hammond offers both sequential and explorative opportunities in the arts. Students can elect up to eight consecutive years in Choral Music, Instrumental Music, or Visual Arts and six years in Theater Arts, Technical Theater, or Dance. Minimally, each student selects a range of disciplines in middle school and completes one upper school credit in the Fine Art of his/her choice.
Middle school students are engaged in the arts throughout the school year. All students in fifth and sixth grade attend Visual Art for a nine-week quarter. In addition, they choose one musical component and meet on a rotating schedule for a semester Students in seventh and eighth grade elect two of the six semester courses: Drama, Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Dance, Technical Theatre and Visual Art.
While in upper school, students are encouraged to participate in multiple experiences. Many progress to multiple advanced-level tracks across disciplines. A few students target one area in which to excel. Guided by a dedicated, trusting staff of professionals, the objectives are for each upper school student to be exposed to as many creative experiences as possible and to leave Hammond with an appreciation for arts.
