Sixth Grade Learns About Saving, Diversification & Teamwork - 1/31/06
Hammond’s sixth grade students are participating in a stock market simulation sponsored by the South Carolina Council on Economic Education. Teams of four students have been given a virtual $100,000 to invest in the stock market over a ten week period. The rules are simple…Whoever profits the most, wins!
This is the second year that sixth grade math teacher Nancy White has had students participate in this program. “Although it sounds like a game of money making and chance,” says White, “we focus less on making the most profit in this short term, and more on learning the value of saving over time, diversification and teamwork.
Stock broker Emily Brasher, economist Don Brasher and investment adviser, Robert Key, shared their insight and experience with the students on Friday, January 27. Through these guests, students learned effective online research practices, the concept of portfolio diversification in order to balance out risk, and many other tips for investing.
