Hammond Students Shine at State Science & Engineering Fair - 4/5/07
On March 23, the Central South Carolina Region II Science & Engineering Fair, hosted by the University of South Carolina, was held at the Carolina Coliseum. Students in grades 5-12 who had placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any category of a local school science fair were eligible to exhibit. Over 700 students from nine counties (Calhoun, Clarendon, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland and Sumter Counties) competed for over $30,000.00 in scholarships, savings bonds, trip awards and public recognition. Hammond 6th grader, Mary Heath, took overall honors in chemistry, while eighth grader Nicole Beraho placed second in the engineering category.
Out of 14 projects recognized as “Best 6th Grade Projects”, five were Hammond students: Mary Heath, Caroline Penland, Stephen Mitchell, Shand Owens, and Brandon Prince.
