Student Takes First in USC Poetry Declamation Contest - 11/14/06
On Thursday, November 9th, fifteen students currently enrolled in Latin, French, and Spanish classes ranging from levels 1 through 4 traveled across town to the University of South Carolina campus for the second annual USC Poetry Declamation Contest. Each student was previously selected as class representatives at Hammond earning the opportunity to compete with students from across the Midlands, including representatives from Academic Magnet, Blythewood, Cardinal Newman, Darlington, Hartsville, Heathwood Hall, Lakewood, Spring Valley, Swansea, Trinity Collegiate, and W.A. Perry. Each competitor had to recite two poems in front of a panel of USC language professors.
Caroline Neuffer, a junior, won first place in a very tough Spanish level IV/V category, reciting "Privilegios del Pobre" by Juan del Valle y Caviedes and "Para entonces" by Enrique González Martínez. This was Caroline's second year to be selected for participation in the contest.
The other Hammond representatives were: Bradford MacGillivray - French I, Sarah Prickett & Raymond Prince - French III, Ali Dench & Kayla Hammer - French IV/V, Kayla Ashe & Will McCarthy - Latin II, Anna Beth Lowrey & Mimi Keenan - Latin III, Isabelle Caskey - Latin IV/V, Ramsey Ugarte & Tyler Akers - Spanish II and Beth Cotter & Rosanne Sullivan - Spanish III.
Congratulations to all of Hammond's representatives and special congratulations to Caroline.
