Fifth Grade Readers Revel in Their Accomplishment - 5/18/06
On Tuesday, May 16, Hammond fifth graders celebrated the successful completion of their Reading Challenge project. Back in November, they established a goal for their class of 73 readers: collectively, they would try to read 500 books by May 1st. They celebrated their accomplishment on Tuesday with a special luncheon followed by mind-bending "Survivor" games.
As a show of support for their reading achievements,
parents of these fifth graders agreed tocontribute fifty cents for every book read by their son or daughter. These generous contributions added up to $330! A check for $330 will be presented to the Executive Director of the Greater Columbia Literacy Council, Ms.
Debbie Yoho, at the Middle School assembly on Friday, May 19. The
Literacy Council provides reading instruction for illiterate adults in the Columbia area.
