Middle School Math Team Rates First in State - 10/23/06
The Hammond Middle School Math Team traveled to Orangeburg on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 to compete in the SCISA Division I Math Meet. After completing a one hour written test, the competitors were judged on speed and accuracy. During the speed round, individuals are given one minute and three tries to get points for themselves and their teams.
The eighth grade team rated first in the state among forty-two other teams, scoring twenty points higher than the second place team. Competing against the same students as the eighth graders, the seventh grade team was seventh in the state.
Individual honors went to eighth graders Ted Lydon, Sarah Dobbs, and Drew Dixon and seventh grader Devon Kilgore. Dixon placed first in the state and had the high score for his team, with Dobbs and Lydon placing third and fourth, respectively. Kilgore earned the high score for his seventh grade team. These individuals should be quite proud having scored so well in a pool of 215 competitors.
Team sponsors, Sally Aldridge and Lou Warth, would like to applaud all students who participated. In addition to those listed above, the following students also competed: Adair Bramlett, Alexa Breeland, Sarah Felmly, William Graham, Savannah Harwood, Matthew Shuler, and Braeden Troyer.
The Math Team was recognized during the Middle School assembly on Friday, October 14. Select photographs are below.
