Skyhawks Seize Titles; Poised to Capture More - 10/25/06
As the end of the fall athletic season nears, the Skyhawks have seized an impressive three Region II-AAA Championships, one SCISA State Championship title and are poised to capture a few more.
Clinching both Region and State Championships, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team closed out the season on Saturday, October 21, by defeating Heathwood Hall during the South Carolina Independent School Association Class 3A final at Sumter’s Palmetto Tennis Center. The Lady Skyhawks had previously beaten Heathwood Hall in a tiebreaker match on Friday, October 13, to win the Region Championship.
Winning their fourth consecutive Region Championship, the Lady Skyhawks Varsity Volleyball team defeated St. Joseph's (Greenville) and went on to compete in the SCISA State Playoffs, October 20-21. The Lady Hawks defeated St. Joseph's in the second round, 2-1, and then fell to Ashley Hall and Northwoods in the following rounds.
The Skyhawks Varsity Football team jumped to 9-0 with victories over region foes Heathwood Hall (20-16) on October 14, and Ben Lippen (42-14) on October 20. The squad looks toward facing Defending State Champion, Augusta Christian, in the regular season finale on Friday, October 27. A win in this game would give the Skyhawks a Region II-AAA title going in to the SCISA State Quarterfinals on November 3.
Earning their second consecutive Region Championship, the Lady Skyhawks Cross Country team beat Heathwood Hall on Wednesday, October 18. Previously, the girls won the First Annual Skyhawk Invitational, Thursday, Oct. 12 and the Augusta Prep Invitational on October 7. In both, All Varsity Runners placed in the top ten. At Augusta, the Middle School girls were the runners-up. All Cross Country teams are preparing for the SCISA State Championships at Heathwood on Saturday, October 28.
