Middle School
Middle school students are at a most complicated
developmental stage. It is essential that they form strong
relationships with adults. At Hammond, sensitive, intuitive
faculty members are carefully selected to guide them to discover
who they are and to encourage them to recognize the significance
of their own thoughts and feelings.
The middle school preliminary level (5th, 6th) is a bridge
between the lower school and the middle school transitional
level (7th, 8th). With the exception of assemblies and special
school events, students spend the majority of the day with
their peers. Each level has its own specifically designed
building. The younger middle school students follow a modified
schedule for core curriculum with fewer rotations and longer
class periods. They sample the entire menu of related areas
(visual art, music, drama, physical education, and technology),
so that they may focus on their favorites in 7th and 8th
grades. The last two years of middle school more closely
resemble a "junior high" model. Interscholastic
athletics are built into the program and students may receive
upper school credit in the areas of language and math.
At all grade levels, students strive to find their own
paths and to achieve their personal best.
