Hammond Athletics Overview

A Word from our Athletic Director

As we look forward to another great year of Hammond Athletics, I want to thank you for your support of our athletic program.  Whether you purchased an ad in the athletic programs, joined the Skyhawk Club, or support our athletes on the field, we truly appreciate your involvement and support.

A fantastic athletic season has begun and I would encourage you to join us in emphasizing what matters most to your young athletes.  While we strive to win every contest in which we participate, we must not lose sight of the values that athletics can teach us.

I urge you to dwell on our mission statement for this year.  Originally adopted by Erik Kimrey and the football team, our mission, in two simple words, encompasses a world of truth:

"Winning Forever"

In an ultimate sense, we must look past winning and losing.  While you will
certainly see us striving to win, it should be merely our proximate aim. But
our ultimate aim is to produce men and women who learn lessons which
transcend a single season.  We must strive to evaluate every performance and
consider the long-term implications of our actions.  In a sense, we must
redefine "winning."  As we learn courage, accountability, love for each
other, and a purpose greater than ourselves, we step into the metaphysical
world of ethics, faith, and transcendent qualities that are not defined in
so crude a manner as the quickly dimming lights on a scoreboard.

So stand together with us this year and celebrate.  Cheer when we win.  But
cheer also when we lose.  For if we are truly living out our mission, even
when we lose, we will be winning....forever.

Sincerely,  Andy Edgren

Athletics at Hammond School

Hammond School encourages participation in athletic teams as a means of promoting healthy competition, a heightened sense of accomplishment and enjoyment, and the ability to manage time carefully and productively.

Intramural sports are offered in the lower grades through 6th; students in grades 7-12 may participate in any of 20 interscholastic sports, including football, basketball, baseball, tennis, track, cross country, volleyball, wrestling, golf, swimming, and cheerleading.  Recent additions include lacrosse and clay target shooting program.  Hammond’s athletic programs enjoy enthusiastic support and boast approximately 90 percent participation by Middle and Upper School students.  Character development, sportsmanship, and teamwork are emphasized.  Students and parents alike sign a Code of Conduct.  Competing in South Carolina Independent School Association Division AAA and benefiting from the guidance of many former college players as their coaches, the Hammond Skyhawks regularly win 70 percent of their games, including state and regional championships.  In 2007 and 2008, the Skyhawks boasted five championship winning teams.

Participation

Students entering 7th through 12th grade are encouraged to join an athletic team. Many teams do not have cuts during try-outs however if a student does not make a team in his or her sport of choice, an opportunity is still afforded the student to join another team.

Facilities

Athletic facilities include 2 gyms, a wrestling barn, six tennis courts, a lighted football stadium, and a lighted baseball field.  During the 2004-2005 school year, improvements began on the previously undeveloped 77 acres on the South Campus.  These improvements have resulted in the addition of baseball practice field, softball and soccer fields; tennis courts; a cross country course; track and field facilities, and nature trails.  Additional renovations included a new gym floor, new locker facilities and new seating for spectators.  Also, worthy of note is the fact that the South Campus includes little league baseball diamonds that are used by the Palmetto Baseball League, which is now in its 52 year of operation.
