The Skyhawks (12-1 overall,
4-0 region) won its second straight state championship
when Joseph Zemp's 29-yard field goal with 1:29 remaining
in the fourth quarter went through the uprights and
lifted Hammond to a 17-14, come-from-behind victory
over Augusta Christian on Friday night at Oliver C.
Dawson Stadium.
The Skyhawks trailed 14-7 with less than five minutes
to go, but they cashed ni fumble recoveries by Chase
Loveless and Will Patterson down the stretch.
Loveless recovered a Jay Harmon fumble at the Augusta
Christian 7-yard-line with 4:09 left. Three
plays later, quarterback Cliff Ayers hit Alston James
on a fade route for a 12-yard score. Zemp's
extra point tied the game at 14 with 3:18 left.
Patterson pounced on a Corey Critell-fumble on the
second play of Augusta Christian's ensuing possession,
giving the Skyhawks the ball at the Lions' 33 with
3:05 to go. The Hawks converted one first down
to inch closer, and then Zemp made the kick to seal
the win.
